Triton

D&D Triton Race (also known as Merfolk)

The Tritons, also known as Merfolk, are an ancient and venerable sea-faring people who dwell in the depths of the ocean, primarily in the sunken city of Atlantis. They were once ordinary humans, the first inhabitants of Atlantis when the city still stood above the sea. When a magical catastrophe submerged the city beneath the waves, the survivors were transformed by the will of the sea
and possibly by Thal’Krabb himself into
amphibious beings: the Tritons.

Appearance and Abilities

Tritons combine an elegant human form with fish-like features. Their fingers are connected by thin membranes, and they have gills along the sides of their necks, allowing them to breathe underwater. In the water, their lower bodies transform into streamlined tails, making them fast and agile swimmers. Above water, their legs return to a normal form, enabling movement on land, though less gracefully than other races.

Their skin is often glossy and scaled, with colors ranging from deep blue to silvery green, depending on their family and habitat. Their eyes are large and expressive, adapted to the dim light of the deep sea.

Lifestyle and Society

Tritons inhabit the glittering ruins of Atlantis, where they live alongside other sea-dwelling races such as the Karokans, Octopodes, Whalefolk, and Jellyfolk. They hold a permanent seat in the Council of the Depths the political hub of the oceanic nations and play a key role in maintaining peace and harmony among the sea peoples.

Their culture emphasizes honor, service, and knowledge of ancient sea magic. Tritons are curious, wise, and devoted to protecting the ocean from surface intruders.

Faith: Thal’Krabb, Guardian of the Depths

Tritons worship Thal’Krabb, the god of the sea and Guardian of the Depths, like many other oceanic peoples. According to their legends, he saved them from drowning and guided their transformation. Thal’Krabb appears in visions as a colossal crab adorned with golden ornaments and ruins on his shell a symbol of eternal power, oceanic wisdom, and protection.

Throughout Atlantis, temples dedicated to Thal’Krabb are common, often constructed from coral, mother-of-pearl, and shipwrecks. His image adorns many shrines, and his name is invoked by seafarers and sea priests alike.
