Koalafolk
D&D Koalafolk Race
Koalafolk resemble small, furry creatures that closely resemble koalas. They are short in stature, but don’t underestimate them. Koalafolk are known for their exceptional climbing skills, deep slumber, and keen sense of balance. Their strong hands, rough palms, and sturdy claws give them an excellent grip even when they sleep hanging from a branch.
Appearance & Temperament
Though they move slowly and calmly, Koalafolk are wise and observant. They live in small tribes, hidden deep within eucalyptus forests. Their fur is usually grayish in color, with large, fluffy ears and a broad, sensitive nose. Some wear chalk- or berry-painted tattoos, or ceremonial masks often white with red stripes across the face.
Way of Life
Koalafolk are known to be stubborn and wary of outsiders. They attack quickly out of self-defense, especially when they feel threatened. Their most treasured possession is the eucalyptus plant: it is their favorite food and also holds deep spiritual meaning for them.
The Slumberseer
Each tribe is led by a spiritual chief known as the Slumberseer. This is always the oldest and wisest member of the tribe. The Slumberseer wears a crown of feathers and is often found meditating beside the tribe’s Totem Pole.
Totem Pole
The Totem Pole is a wooden pillar decorated with carved ancestral faces and topped with a bird figure. The Koalafolk worship this pole, believing it protects their tribe. At night, they dance around it to drive away evil spirits and honor their gods.
When a new Slumberseer is chosen, they are tasked with creating a new Totem Pole. The old leader is symbolically and sometimes literally bound to the pole and sacrificed by fire, so that their spirit may pass into the new totem and continue to protect the tribe
