Candlehead

DnD Candlehead Race

The Candleheads are a  mysterious and peaceful race that dwell deep underground. They live in small villages or in their great capital: Candle City.

Candleheads resemble living candles: their bodies are made of wax, usually white, though they can take on any shade. Their limbs are firmly shaped from this wax, and atop their head sits a wick that burns continuously, a flame that almost never goes out. Even if water is poured over it, the fire will extinguish for no more than five seconds before reigniting on its own. These flames can appear in different colors and serve not only as a source of light but also as a weapon, for they can set things ablaze.

Life Cycle and Origins

Candleheads have an exceptionally long lifespan, with some living a thousand years or more. Interestingly, their size is the opposite of what one would expect: the larger a Candlehead, the younger they are. Older Candleheads are often smaller in stature.

Candleheads are not born in the traditional sense. Their origin lies in the candle trees, magical trees that grow deep underground and are sacred to the people. Each tree contains a unique colored sap. To create a Candlehead child, the adults gather this sap and mold it, while it is still soft, into a desired shape with a wick. Once the wick is lit, the being comes to life. This is a sacred ritual in which the whole community participates. Candle trees are revered as divine beings, for without them the Candlehead people would not exist.

Society and Culture

The oldest living Candlehead automatically becomes the king of the people. However, he does not rule alone: he is assisted by the High Council of Candleheads, a group of the oldest and wisest members of their kind. Together, they make the great decisions that determine the fate of their society. During gatherings, the Council literally sits “above” the people, on tall candleholders that serve as thrones. When they must address others, the holders are slowly lowered, so that the Council may share their words and listen to the concerns of the community.

The king resides in a palace made of pure diamond, located at the heart of Candle City, the largest Candlehead settlement, built entirely underground. The city itself is a marvel: rich with glittering minerals, with buildings made of stone, silver, gold, and other precious metals.

Candleheads are known as a prosperous and kind-hearted people. They harm no one and are renowned for their hospitality. Visitors are always welcomed with open arms, even if they stay only for a single day. Upon arrival, guests are often given a tour of the breathtaking architecture and, of course, the sacred candle tree, the heart of their faith and existence.

When a Candlehead dies, the entire village or city gathers. Together they watch as the flame fades, a solemn and emotional moment of farewell and reverence.
