Karokans
Dnd Karokans Race (also known as Crabfolk)
The Karokans, also known as Crabfolk, are a powerful and ancient seafaring people with a strikingly crab-like appearance. They live primarily in the depths of the ocean, settling in coral caves, shipwrecks (especially abandoned pirate ships), and in the sunken city of Atlantis, alongside other underwater races such as the Octofolk, Whalefolk, and Jellyfolk.
The Karokans are a proud and influential race, and one of their representatives always holds a seat on the council of Atlantis. Because of their deep spiritual bond with Thal’Krabb, the god of the sea, they are regarded by many underwater peoples as the direct descendants of this deity. It is no coincidence that Karokans are often chosen as Kings of the Seas during the five-yearly election of the ruler of Atlantis.
Appearance and Traits
Karokans combine humanoid features with the robust armor and forms of a crab. They have a sturdy, naturally armored physique with two powerful claws for hands. Some of them possess a hard, shell-like carapace on their back, serving both as protection and as storage. Many decorate this shell with seashells, seaweed, or magical runes, and some even use it as a mobile home.
Their skin is usually red or orange, though rare variants exist with blue, green, or even striped patterns. Thanks to their natural armor, Karokans are exceptionally tough and resistant to physical harm, and their claws can be used both offensively and defensively. They are able to breathe both above and below water, making them excellent guardians of the boundary between sea and land.
Culture and Lifestyle
The Karokans maintain a pragmatic, proud culture that revolves around honor, service to the ocean, and protection of their community. Unlike the playful Jellyfolk, they are serious, strategic, and often reserved. However, they are not without humor — it simply expresses itself in subtle and often ironic ways.
Karokans have a love of collecting treasures, especially from abandoned ships. They view forgotten objects as memories of the surface world that deserve respect. Many Karokans build their homes within the wrecks of old pirate ships, which they transform into fortresses or shrines dedicated to Thal’Krabb.
Faith
No race is as closely tied to Thal’Krabb, the Watcher of the Depths, as the Karokans. In their lore, he was the forefather of their people, born from the rocks of the ocean floor. His colossal claws and golden armor embody the ultimate symbols of strength, protection, and oceanic wisdom. Karokan temples are often sculpted in the shape of crabs or massive shells, filled with ancient symbolism and profound rituals.
Closing Thought
The Karokans are the foundation of ocean society: powerful, protective, and steeped in ancient tradition. Where the Jellyfolk dance and the Octofolk dream, it is the Karokans who stand watch.
